Social media is the latest trend in the internet. It helped to define web 2.0. As popular as social media websites currently are, the whole concept is still very primitive. There are many similarities between them all. Some of them are better programmed while others have better marketability due to their niche nature. The following is a list I compiled of websites that offer internet profiles.
Many online services attempt to categorize these websites that offer internet profiles. The truth is that the whole concept is really too new to understand what a definitive breakdown would consist of. Retaggr does the best job of categorizing internet profiles that I have seen so far. The breakdown below is a very general categorization of websites that offer free internet profiles. Within the Blog Websites are websites that offer a free blogging platform or blog commenting service. Included in this category is Technorati, a website about the whole blogosphere. The section for Media Sharing Websites includes websites with internet profiles for sharing music, video, and images. Included in this category are portfolio websites for artists and professional presentations. Under Social Bookmark Websites are several websites that offer internet profiles for social bookmarks and online news feeds. This list also includes websites that offer profiles specific to the internet industry as well as product bookmarking. Finally, the list under Social Media Websites includes websites that offer internet profiles for professionals, social media, micro-blogging services, location and activity based services, and the other internet services that don't fit into any other category I am presenting. There are still many more internet profile offering websites on the internet, and the future of this index will include a review for every known one of them.
